SYDNEY METRO VICTORIA CROSS

Overview:

This fourteen-week project with a dedicated team of 26 highly skilled asbestos & hazardous professionals from ASP Australia involved working on a combination of multi-storey commercial concrete structures. This project profile however will focus on only one of the four structures on Miller Street, North Sydney.

Summary:

The 14-level concrete structure on Miller Street, North Sydney had a building footprint of approximately 1,000 m2. Friable fire rated asbestos insulation was found to the interface between precast and spandrel brackets, horizontally to the precast and slab edge on all levels.

The challenges ASP Australia faced were:

  • Unexpected asbestos finds in cavities
  • Managing unexpected finds during structural demo
  • Maintaining air quality control for air borne respirable fibres whilst demolition activity being overlapped with hazmat works
  • Very tight program to deliver all buildings inclusive of strip out and hazmat scope

The risk avoidance was the elevated fibre counts due to the adjacent childcare and the bird netting waste chute with recyclables.

With a strong crew, dedicated Project Management team and cooperative client all challenges were eradicated. The project was successfully delivered with no disruption and issues to adjacent childcare, within timeframe and budget.
